Austin of Providence, in 1881, there is a list of the families who settled there before 1690, The following information appears. In the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, published by J. Henry made his will 24 March 1708 and it was proved 20 August 1716. It is not known whether he married his wife, Elizabeth Ketchum, before or after leaving England. He emigrated to America before 1683 and settled in Little Compton, Rhode Island. Notes Note: Henry Head was born in England in 1647. Because Little Compton was once part of the Plymouth colony, all probate and land records prior to 1746 can be found in Taunton and New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts. ![]() ![]() As originally established, Newport County consisted of four towns: Portsmouth, Newport, Jamestown, and New Shoreham.īy 1747, Little Compton along with Tiverton and the Town of Bristol, secured their own royal decree, were incorporated, and annexed to Newport County as a part of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Newport County was constituted on June 22, 1703, as one of the two original counties of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Little Compton’s name and land area was unchanged.ġ691 - Little Compton as part of the original settlement of Plymouth Colony, merges with Massachusetts Bay Colony, et al to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1685, when the division was made of Plymouth Colony, Bristol County had the towns of Taunton, Rehoboth, Dartmouth, Swansea, Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton, Freetown and the plantations of Cumberland Gore and Attleboro. Of the original 29, who all lived in or near Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, “probably not five of their number had ever seen their goodly lands by the sea”. 29 men proved their shares in the grant of land at Seaconet these 29 were the original proprietors of Little Compton.ġ674 - First white settlement in the wilderness, which eventually became the Town of Little Compton (a white settlement of 5-6 people existed before this date-none of them being the original 29 proprietors). "Little Compton Families", author Benjamin Wilbore: His will, recorded in Taunton Probate Book 3,, made Ma"in the eighth year of our sovereign Lady Ann, Queen of England" and proved August 20, 1716. Henry Head's will is included in these documents.
